Madison County Libraries - Library Journal

My local library won Library Journal’s 2018 award for best small library in America, and I had the pleasure of photographing the library and the wonderful people who make it such a special part of our small community.  In our rapidly digitizing world, it was refreshing to spend time with people committed to preserving the small public library as a vibrant community space.

Read the Library Journal article about how the Madison County Libraries earned this award  here.

Special thanks to Melanie Morgan, Library Director for Madison County Libraries, for showing me around, and to Kevin Henegan, Editor at Library Journal, for the opportunity to do this shoot!

Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard, NC - Imbibe Magazine

Back in June I had my first opportunity to photograph for Imbibe Magazine. I spent the day down at Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard, NC shooting their outdoor bar, food truck, and farmers market. It was incredible to see the rich food and beer culture of Western North Carolina on display all in one place. Smells of smoked fish, fresh produce and well hopped beer mixed together over the sounds of people coming together to enjoy good weather, good drink, and good company. If you haven’t been, you should check it out. If you need more convincing, take a look at these photos and read the article in Imbibe’s September/October issue!

Botanical Studies - The Beginning

Botanical Studies - The Beginning

As a kid, I spend my summers in Maine and Canada canoe-tripping through some of the most pristine lands in North America, but the forests that lined those rivers and lakes appeared as nothing but a green wall to me. It was all a giant beautiful mess of life that I could never piece apart or understand. So in the past 2 years, when I began paying closer attention to the plants I found around me here in Western North Carolina and the ones I've cultivated in my garden, that green wall began to disappear.

Dr. Charles Quarles - Our State Magazine

Dr. Charles Quarles - Our State Magazine

When I first entered the home of Dr. Charles Quarles in Forest City, NC it was rather unassuming. From the outside it was just another ordinary ranch style home on a long suburban street. The first floor was carefully decorated with antique furniture, landscape paintings are hung on the wall and I could hear I Love Lucy playing on the TV in the kitchen. Then Mr. Quarles invited me downstairs and things quickly become out of the ordinary.

A Seat at the Table

A Seat at the Table

Metaphorically, the tables were set months ago as chef John Fleer began to dream up what would become A Seat at the Table. This inaugural event was held on the evening of May 9 at Fleer’s The Rhu and Rhubarb. The event was invite-only and sold out weeks in advance.
