Botanical Studies - The Beginning

Botanical Studies - The Beginning

As a kid, I spend my summers in Maine and Canada canoe-tripping through some of the most pristine lands in North America, but the forests that lined those rivers and lakes appeared as nothing but a green wall to me. It was all a giant beautiful mess of life that I could never piece apart or understand. So in the past 2 years, when I began paying closer attention to the plants I found around me here in Western North Carolina and the ones I've cultivated in my garden, that green wall began to disappear.

Dr. Charles Quarles - Our State Magazine

Dr. Charles Quarles - Our State Magazine

When I first entered the home of Dr. Charles Quarles in Forest City, NC it was rather unassuming. From the outside it was just another ordinary ranch style home on a long suburban street. The first floor was carefully decorated with antique furniture, landscape paintings are hung on the wall and I could hear I Love Lucy playing on the TV in the kitchen. Then Mr. Quarles invited me downstairs and things quickly become out of the ordinary.

Mountain Xpress Newspaper Article

I was super excited to see my image in the Mountain Xpress, an Asheville, NC based newspaper yesterday!  The photograph is of world class aerial and pole artist Waverley Jones in her new aerial arts studio Empyrean Arts in Asheville. My good friend and talented writer, Eliza Stokes wrote the article. Can't wait to collaborate with Eliza on more projects in the future.

Chargaux on Refinery29's Website

This past winter I had the opportunity to photograph the music duo Chargaux in Brooklyn, New York for Refinery29. Today I was so excited to see my images used on Refinery's website as they released the first part of their Sound Off video series. A big thank you to Refinery29, Chargaux and especially Julia Pitch for making this shoot happen.

My Desk For The Next Week

_JFS5007.jpg

Yesterday I drove the 1150 miles from Austin, TX to Asheville, NC. Today I am sitting on my friend Ben's porch in Asheville, journaling and working on my laptop as a midday rainstorm coming rolling through the Blue Ridge Mountains. I'll be here for the next week, and already I don't want to leave.
